Suburban Turmoil: These are a Few of My Favorite Things

  • harrtyimes · 5 months ago
Oh my god-- I love the Bunn. Great coffee in no time. But I have since grown too impatient to wait through its interminable 3-minute brew cycle and have switched to a Keurig, which I LOVE EVEN MORE.
  • suburbanturmoil · 5 months ago
Oh yeah, sometimes the three minutes seems like an eternity, especially when it's 6am!! My husband has an annoying habit of grabbing a cup while it's still brewing and leaving the mess for me to clean up!

I've never heard of Keurig. I'll have to check it out!
  • Cheri · 5 months ago
Trader Joes. Can't live without that place for healthy easy kid food and really cheap wine.
  • suburbanturmoil · 5 months ago
Our Trader Joes isn't allowed to carry wine because of our stupid state law, but whenever we visit the in laws in LA, we stuff our suitcases full of Two-Buck Chuck!!

I also LOVE Trader Joe's Mochi ice cream. *CRAVING*

For recipes, I'm an AllRecipes girl - it gives you the freedom to see how others rated each recipe, and the adjustments they made to make it better!
  • suburbanturmoil · 5 months ago
I love the ratings, too. I won't even look at a recipe site that doesn't have a ratings feature.

I also love putting ingredients I have on hand into Allrecipes' search bar and finding something I can make without going to the grocery. Allrecipes has so many recipes that it's good for that, even if all you have is chicken breasts and cornflakes!
  • Diane · 5 months ago
Swiffer Wet Jet. I would die without this. Somebody told my husband that they'd heard it can be toxic??? I was like that's got to be urban legend- I refuse to believe this. And I'm sure that that wasn't said by a Mom. Especially one who lives in the woods with 4 dogs, a baby and a husband. And who happens to be anal when it comes to the clean.

Now if I could only find a vacuum I love as much as you do your Dyson.
  • Jen · 5 months ago
It is an urban legend..check out http://www.snopes.com It's on there!

On the opposite side of the coffee spectrum can I just tell you how much we Loooveee our Keurig! My husband drinks coffee - only one cup in the morning but he must have it - I do not. The Keurig makes his one cup perfectly and off he goes. No waste. No pot to clean.

And here comes the good part...

Then I get up and make my one cup of English Breakfast Tea - same machine but I have tea Cups instead of his coffee cups. I pop my k-cup in and in seconds I have a perfectly brewed cup of tea. No waste. No pot to clean.

    and here's the icing....

7 year old gets up - wanders in, grabs cup sticks it under - hits one button and she's got a cup of hot water - that she dumps a envelope of hot chocolate into and viola she's made her morning hot chocolate. No mess, no dangerous heating .. No Waste. No pot to clean up.

All of us use the same machine and none of us leave a mess behind, how can you not love that?

Those are great choices; I especially love AT Loft. I used to shop American Eagle heavily, but they kept making the shirts narrower and narrower (seriously, my size hasn't changed!). As I do NOT want everyone to count every roll and dimple, I branched out and found Loft. I love that the shirts are a little wider so they aren't skin tight.

    Some of my favorites are:

Homegoods. I think the company is owned by TJ Maxx; it's very much like it but ALL household stuff. Dishes, towels, bedding, mirrors, lamps, etc. and a HUGE assortment of decorating stuff. I'm there almost every weekend when the Halloween stuff comes out. The stuff is super-cheap and super-cute. They even get gourmet foods like chocolates, coffee syrups, cookies...you know, the little things you can try and feel like you're splurging but being thrifty about it.

Bath and Body Works. I can't get enough lotions, scented oils, air fresheners and other good-smellies. I hit 'em hard twice a year for the semi-annual sales and get a lot for cheap.

Jif peanut butter. My husband and I go through a few POUNDS each month, using it in protein smoothies, on toast or graham crackers, and right out of the jar with a spoon. That's right--I said pounds per month. Mmmm...

Here's something I don't like anymore: Pier 1. They changed the feel of the store a couple of years ago and I just don't like it. Or maybe it's because my local store got new management around that time and all the long-time employees quit. They all new me, not by name, but well enough to recognize me and know what I like. The new employees are CONSTANTLY on me, "can I help you?, can I help you?, can I help you?" Yes, you could leave me alone to look around! And quit following me like I'm going to shoplift. Grr.

    Okay, I'm calmer now. :)

love the clorox green. The fact that it doesnt send my asthma into a furry I am happy.

we also love trader joes and whole foods. Two of my favorite places.

I have a new summer love- Nestle "Delicias" Coconut Ice Cream Bars. They weren't with the regular ice cream - they were in the weirdly segregated "ethnic" ice cream section at the Safeway - and probably at any hispanic grocery store in town.

They are light and refreshing with a few chewy coconut bits mixed in. Only 130 calories each which is so much better than a whole pint of ice cream... My husband says they taste like sun tan lotion, but he still eats them!

    Smuckers Uncrustables....

At first I was all like... PUH-LEAZE... how hard is it to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? Only lazy asses would buy those things.

What I didn't realize was that they are not just peanut butter and jelly but are actually peanut butter, jelly and CRACK.
  • Kate M · 5 months ago
My husband seconds that assessment, usually as he's complaining that he needs to lose weight :)

Asian pears have been a big hit in our house lately; the kids especially love the little styrofoam covering that they are packed in! And I am jealous of your Dyson! I've wanted one for a while, but am disappointed to hear that it doesn't work well on bare floors (which most of my house is).
  • suburbanturmoil · 5 months ago
I think it works fine on bare floors, just not any better than any other vacuum I've had. However, the suction really is forever on a Dyson if you're willing to clean it out every once in a while, so if you're having suction issues with other vacuums after you've had them a few years (major problem for me), the Dyson is definitely the way to go, no matter what kind of floors you have.
  • magicalsummer · 5 months ago
styrofoam is non-bio degradable! i'm really surprised to find a statement like this coming from someone who lives in a country where awareness is supposed to be high, and where it's not difficult to find an equally good product with more eco friendly packaging. don't we, collectively, have a responsibility to doing our bit for the earth?
  • Paula · 5 months ago
Actually magical summer- some "styro-foam" is biodegradeable - it is made from cornstarch. AND most fruit packers use it to protect fragile fruit such as Asian Pears.

We have several Melissa and Doug toys. Quick story, someone gave my boys this huge M & D wooden parking garage for Christmas one year (it sold for around $80). After a couple of months the little wooden gate stopped working correctly. Still totally usuable, you just had to lift the gate manually instead of using the knob. I called M&D to see if they had any suggestions for fixing it. I wasn't expecting anything else, just thought maybe they'd had similar complaints and could tell me how to fix it. They informed me that it had been discontinued, but to make up for my "loss" they asked if it would be okay if they sent me the castle (also around $80) to make up for it. And BTW, I should just keep the garage and enjoy that too. Needless to say, I've been a huge customer/cheerleader for them ever since. They really stand behind their toys like no one else.
  • suburbanturmoil · 5 months ago
We have the parking garage too- That's the product I called about, actually. One of the pieces had a hole drilled in the wrong place. It's such a simple toy, but my son loves it so much that he plays with it every single day. He even plays with it for hours at an indoor playcenter that has the same toy!

And I want that castle. Badly. I've seen it a few times at Toys R Us and sighed with longing. :)

I love my Bunn too! I had a hard time finding the coffee filters in the beginning (never thought to check by the actual coffee pots), so DH ordered some online. An entire CASE came in the mail. I now have coffee filters for LIFE! Or maybe a year or two.

What do you do to clean your Dyson? I haven't had luck finding instructions on how/what to clean, other than the big filter underneath the canister.
  • suburbanturmoil · 5 months ago
I just buy filters at the grocery for my Bunn. They seem to fit fine.

I just started looking over my Dyson soon after I bought it and noticed it comes apart pretty easily. Just look around it and you'll see all kinds of little buttons that allow different parts of it to detach and reattach. All of those detachable parts are places that stuff can get lodged in the vacuum.

The biggest (and grossest) thing I do is take the runner brush at the bottom of the vacuum out every few months and cut all the hair and debris out of it. That's a little more complicated, but still manageable. I unscrew the plate with a coin, pull the brush out of the thick rubber band, cut all the hair and debrisoff of it, then use a flathead screwdriver to get the rubber band back around it and put it back into place. When I first bought it, it made a horrible sound on area rugs when it was on the "carpet" setting. I looked on Dyson.com (which has a great "help" section with pictures) and realized it was because that brush wasn't turning properly on the rugs. Once I cleaned it out and reattached it, I never heard that noise again!

I basically clean it out every time it starts making that obnoxious loud sound on carpet. If you have a Dyson, you probably know what sound I'm talking about. That just means the rotating brush needs attention.
  • Sharkey · 5 months ago
Ha! My husband bought the box of 1200 filters when we got our Bunn too! I insisted that we could've just used the ones from the grocery store, but he put them side by side and the Bunn version is just a little bit deeper than the regular ones. Since our old coffee maker often pushed the water through so fast that it caused the grinds to overflow into the coffee (ick!), I was forced to see things his way. Good thing, too, because the four-year supply of filters was already here. I hope the coffee pot lasts that long!
  • erinlily · 5 months ago
That's why I went searching for the Bunn filters. Every time I would make a full pot with the regular/non-Bunn filters, the grinds would go everywhere. So gross!

Let's pray for long coffee pot lives.
  • erinlily · 5 months ago
    Oh one more thing -

We bought a Melissa and Doug kitchen for the girls last Christmas. I was dreading putting it together with DH, worrying we'd end up fighting like cats and dogs over the process. The instructions were so.freaking.easy. Painless. Every hole was color coded. No fighting whatsoever. So easy even a caveman could do it. :)
  • nashvegas · 5 months ago
Absolutely love my Bunn! I had to get the kind with a thermal pot and no burner, because I was spoiled with my old coffeemaker that shut itself off. I knew we'd always forget to turn it off and ruin the pots. This thing keeps the coffee hot for hours, and it doesn't sit there and get old/burned.
  • Jen · 5 months ago
I haven't read all the comments yet, so I'm sorry if I repeat any ideas:

If you love Melissa & Doug (we have their easel and it is amazing!!) Then you'll also love KidKraft, my daughters have this kitchen http://www.kidkraft.com/catalog/toys.asp?catid=... and all the accessories for it and they use it every single day!

As far as recipe sites go. I am IN LOVE with http://www.recipezaar.com I used to have the paid subscription..but found out after 2 years and letting my subscription drop that using it without paying for the added features was just as good.
  • suburbanturmoil · 5 months ago
I have two large KidKraft toys (a Barbie dollhouse and a puppet theater) and I've been really happy with them.

I bought the dollhouse in part because parents who reviewed it loved it, AND said that when parts arrived broken (it comes with lots of furniture,) KidKraft's customer service was extremely helpful and prompt about replacing it.

The puppet theater was super easy to put together and had a lot of nice extra touches, like extra signs that let you make your puppet theater into other things (a Post Office, for example) and a place on the front of the theater where you can draw with chalk. They were nice creative touches to make the toy go even farther.

I am the only coffee drinker in my house. If I drank a pot a day, I'd have a Bunn, too. For single-serve coffee, you can't beat Flavia. Single-serve packs crank out coffee shop quality cups in a flash. The design of the pack is nothing short of genius. The coffee brews inside the pack, then the pack pops open and shoots out the mocha yumminess through a filter in the bottom each one. Since no coffee ever touches the machine, there is NO CLEAN-UP. You can also switch to tea or hot cocoa (Dove brand, nonetheless!) with no taste "contamination." I love my Flavia machine so much that I am taking it on vacation with me this summer. It is a serious addiction. http://us.myflavia.com

Just one more... For little girls who love dolls, check out the Only Hearts Club. They are a little smaller than Barbies, soft, and fully posable. The clothes are darling and the accessories promote healthy activities for girls like ballet and horseback riding as opposed to hot-tubbing in the back of a limo (sorry, Babs!) They are very well made and have real glass eyes. They also have a line of tiny stuffed animals that my daughter likes to collect. They are available at Target, online, and in specialty toy stores.
  • Karen · 5 months ago
    Lindsay,

I LOVE this!! We are about to make a Target run, but I have to add a few things off the top of my head.

I am pale. Not the china doll, Nicole Kidman kind of pale, but the pasty, gross you out kind of pale. And since self tanners smell like BO on me, my husband has forbidden me from using them any longer.

I finally tried Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs. It is amazing. Wonderful. Glorious. It is waterproof, and I have tested that in a pool! (Just be sure to blot yourself dry! Don't rub or it will come off on your towel.) It is a little tiny bit time consuming (not too bad at all), but it is worth it to me to not scare children everywhere I go. My main piece of advice for anyone trying it is to lotion up first, and let it absorb completely. I have used this product on scaly legs, and it was disgusting.

I also like my Tassimo coffee maker, mainly because I'm the only coffee drinker in my house.

I love Method products. My favorites are the granite and marble cleaner and the toilet cleaner.

I can't wait for the 'don't like' list.
  • suburbanturmoil · 5 months ago
Ooh, I love Airbrush Legs too. I'm saving that one for my beauty edition of My Favorite Things, which is coming up next week. :)

Great post! We buy a lot of NUGO nutrition bars, with 10g protein and under 200 calories. They sell them at Costco---at least in the Pittsburgh area. We also love our 2006 Electrolux Harmony. It's a small egg shaped canister vacuum. We only have wood floors, and this is great on bare floors. Unfortunately, the "quiet" setting is so quiet I have no excuse not to vacuum when the kids are asleep....I'm into Old Navy yoga pants right now. They are the perfect lounge pant and I can dress them up with tunics, etc., and get them out of the house. I'm not a big beauty product girl, but I love Aveda shampoos, and especially the rosemary mint. I use it as a body wash, too, because it smells so good!

Yay Compassion! I live in Co Springs - the home of Compassion Headquarters and have many dear friends that work for them. They are an incredible operation, with caring staff that seriously 'walks the walk'.
  • Kate M · 5 months ago
One thing I use every single day is my pair of Pampered Chef kitchen shears. (Guilty admission, I actually have 4 pair. Bought a bunch of the old ones on clearance.) They're spring loaded, go in the dishwashter, and I use them to cut chicken fingers, quesadillas, pizza, cooked spaghetti, herbs, you name it. Even thin wire.

For cleaning products, I love Mrs. Meyer's concentrated cleaner and Bon Ami.

One thing I hate: I cannot find a brand of organic and/or cage free eggs in any of my local grocery stores that don't come in 3-part plastic packaging. Why don't they realize people most likely to spend the extra dough are likely to be environmentally conscious?
  • noteverstill · 5 months ago
Thank you for giving me a place to say that I'm completely obsessed right now with Philadelphia's new spinach and artichoke cream cheese. I need it on a bagel every single morning. I used to only eat bagels a few times a week; I'm completely tunnel vision about breakfast right now. You have to try it!

    Priceless!

Here I sat, thinking I was the only one in the universe that had heard of this FlyLady, clogging up my inbox, making me wonder when she would require a 27 fling boogie for her very own emails.

Oh and I get dressed down to my slip on flip-flops. That's got to count for something, right?

Still I will admit, I have learned a thing or two from her. My kitchen sink no longer sparkles every morning like it did for the first month, but it's been a good release to get rid of a good chunk of the clutter!

Magic Eraser by Mr. Clean will remove ANYTHING from ANYTHING. Is awesome stuff.
Also, for eczema (on baby's skin or yours) a must have is California Baby Calendula Cream which is now (angels singing) sold at Target.
Those are my best items for now, but they totally rock, so I feel good about the contribution!! :)
  • suburbanturmoil · 5 months ago
I'm going to have to look for that Calendula Cream. My son has minor eczema and with all the diaper changing hand washing going on around here, I've had a horrible case on my hands ever since he was born.
  • Shannon · 5 months ago
I have eczema on my eyelids. The only thing safe & effective that I have found is Burts Bees Royal Eye Jelly. It works so well & it smells wonderful!I even use it on the skin between my nose & upper lip during cold & flu and/or allergy season.
  • Gini · 5 months ago
I love, love, love my 6-quart KitchenAid mixer. The first Christmas after I got it, and I no longer had to mix all the Christmas cookies by hand, I swear that the sun came out from behind a cloud and angels sang! (well, it was Christmas after all). It is a work horse, my chiropractic needs have been reduced, and I no longer spend Christmas crippled from baking (for some reason, the combination of standing in the kitchen and mixing just kills my back-- but as a masochist, I keep baking year after year anyway!). As a side note, my food processor also kicks butt!

For clothes, I love prana.com. Everything is very comfortable. And although I can wear their products to yoga or when I'm running around on the weekend, some of them are also nice enough to wear to work!

The Keurig is amazing. What I love about it is that you can buy one that hooks to your refridgerator water line and never have to fill a tank. It's always ready to go and it's one cup at a time, so if you feel like a lighter blend, but your husband is dark roast all the way, there is no argument!

Trader Joe's Cedarwood & Sage all purpose cleaner. love it!
  • barbara · 5 months ago
Here are a few things I didn't see:
Simple Green cleaning. Awesome b/c I have those janitor spray bottles and can easily mix up the strength I need to tackle any job. Since it is nontoxic, I don't worry about my kids getting sick from over use.

    burp rags as dust rags.

Baby Blanket sun block. I have a daughter that is allergic to everything. In fact, Cailfornia Baby is the only wash I can use on her. (Saw that already), but Baby Blanket sun block super cheap and doesn't break her out. It's a godsend.

    Baking soda's thousands of uses.

Lastly, Egg Whites. The kind that are packaged like Egg Beaters, but are only egg whites with no additives. I love them because they are pasteurized and I can add them to smoothies to boost the protein. I can whip them into fluff and stir them into cake mixes and pancake mixes in place of eggs and I get the fluffiest cakes ever.

Dude i have deams of the dyson, I long for it, I crave and drool but my husband thinks it's crazy to spend that much on a vac. Maybe i will kill him and use the money to buy a dyson and the two of us could live happily ever after (unless i cheat on him with the roomba which I also totally want but am afraid it would scare the dog too much).

I used to fondle the avocados in the grocery store longingly but uncertainly. Was it ripe enough? Too ripe? Would I be able to eat my pricey purchase within the correct window of time?
And then I found Trader Joe's frozen avocado halves. Perfectly ripened so I can have avocado on a burger or in a salad anytime I want.
  • suburbanturmoil · 5 months ago
Are you SERIOUS?! You have no idea what this means to me. I am an avocado FREAK and had no idea TJ had such a thing!
  • Shannon · 5 months ago
Just an avocado idea: Ruby Tuesday's avovado quesadilla (http://rubytuesdays.com/menu/appetizers.asp) w/ cheddar instead of swiss; or California Pizza Kitchen's Avocado club egg rolls (http://www.cpk.com/menu/appetizers/).

Oooh, that reminds me: Frozen, minced garlic at Trader Joe's (but the brand is Dorot so maybe you can buy it at other stores). Comes in little tiny one-clove squares that pop out of the carton. So, so easy.

    Shaklee's Basic H household cleaner.

It's harmless (they say you could drink it, if you really wanted to. Not sure I'm that thirsty to try though.), and a small bottle will last you forever. It has about a million uses. Okay, only 1,000, but who's counting?

I love the Halo Swaddle Sacks for babies... when my son was a newborn, I was totally paranoid that the blanket we swaddled around him would become untucked and he would suffocate in it. The swaddle sacks (sleep sacks with a velcro cover for the arms) helped alleviate my fear and kept him sleeping well! We still use them now that he is 3 months old.
